Our curriculum

At St Michael Catholic Primary and Nursery School, our curriculum is shaped by our Mission Statement and rooted in our belief that every child is uniquely created by God. We are committed to providing a broad, balanced and ambitious curriculum that nurtures the whole child — spiritually, academically, socially and personally.

We strive to ensure that every pupil, regardless of background, culture, race, gender or ability, is given the opportunity to flourish, succeed and reach their full potential. Our learning offer is creative, engaging and thoughtfully designed around the needs and interests of the children of St Michael’s.

A Curriculum Designed for Our Children

At St Michael’s, our curriculum is more than a statutory framework — it is a carefully crafted journey that reflects the children we serve. We fulfil all national requirements while designing learning that is rich, purposeful and meaningful, helping every child grow in confidence, curiosity and capability.

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

In Foundation Stage 1 and 2, children follow the EYFS Framework through a nurturing, play‑based approach that builds strong foundations for communication, independence and a love of learning.

Years 1–6: The National Curriculum

As pupils move through the school, they experience a broad and progressive curriculum that promotes depth of understanding, challenge, continuity and enjoyment across all subjects.

Our Curriculum Approaches and Programmes

To ensure high-quality teaching and learning, we draw on a number of carefully chosen schemes and partnerships:

Religious Education

  • We follow The Way, The Truth and The Life syllabus, supporting pupils in deepening their faith, understanding the teachings of Jesus and living out Gospel values.

English

  • Power of Reading: high‑quality, literature‑rich learning.
  • RWI (Read Write Inc.): structured, effective phonics for early reading.
  • Writing is taught through engaging stimuli, purposeful outcomes and rich vocabulary development.

Mathematics

  • White Rose Maths: mastery-based teaching that builds strong fluency, reasoning and problem-solving.

RSHE

  • Life to the Full (Ten Ten): a Catholic, values‑led approach that teaches relationships, health and emotional wellbeing with dignity and respect.

Computing

  • Purple Mash: a creative, progressive and accessible platform supporting coding, digital literacy and safe online practice.

Music

  • Kapow Music: a vibrant, engaging scheme that develops musical knowledge, performance, creativity and appreciation across all year groups.

Design & Technology

  • Kapow D&T: structured units that build skills in designing, making and evaluating high‑quality products.

Physical Education

  • Get Set for PE: a comprehensive, skills‑progressive scheme ensuring high‑quality PE lessons that build confidence, fitness, teamwork and enjoyment.
  • We also work in partnership with STRIVE Sports, enabling pupils to take part in school competitions, festivals and wider sporting opportunities.

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) – French

  • Primary Languages Network: providing high‑quality French teaching with accurate pronunciation, cultural understanding and progressive language skills.

Beyond the National Curriculum

At St Michael’s, we enrich learning through wide‑ranging opportunities that help pupils grow as curious, resilient and reflective learners:

  • Theme days and subject weeks
  • Educational visits and visitors
  • Forest School sessions
  • Collective worship and spiritual development
  • Charity work and community involvement
  • Leadership opportunities (School Council, Sports Leaders, etc.)
  • Creative arts and performance

We want children to develop a love of learning, a sense of wonder and the confidence to embrace challenge both now and in their futures.

To support clarity and communication, we share:

  • Yearly Overviews – showing long‑term planning for each year group
  • Termly Overviews – outlining what your child will be learning each term
  • Subject Overviews – providing clear progression of knowledge, skills and vocabulary across each subject from EYFS to Year 6

These documents help parents and carers stay engaged, informed and confident in understanding their child’s learning journey.
