Pupil leadership groups

At St. Michael Catholic Primary and Nursery School, we believe every child has the potential to lead and make a difference. Our pupil leadership groups reflect our commitment to British Values, Catholic Social Teaching, and our Catholic ethos, giving children a voice and empowering them to shape school life.

 How It Works

At the start of each academic year, children are invited to nominate themselves for a leadership role in one of our many groups, including:

  • School Council
  • Mini Vinnies
  • Prayer Leaders
  • Restorative Justice Champions
  • Sports Champions
  • Art Ambassadors …and more!

To be elected, pupils prepare a short speech and present it to their class, explaining why they would make a great leader. Their classmates then vote to choose the representatives for each group.

Links to Catholic Social Teaching

Our leadership programme is rooted in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching, including:

  • Human Dignity – Every child is valued and respected, with opportunities to contribute meaningfully.
  • Participation – Children are encouraged to take an active role in decisions that affect their school community.
  • Solidarity – Leaders work together to promote inclusion, kindness, and justice.
  • Option for the Poor and Vulnerable – Groups like Mini Vinnies lead charitable initiatives, supporting those in need.
  • Care for Creation – Art Ambassadors and Eco Champions promote stewardship of the environment.

Links to PSHE

Through pupil leadership, children develop key PSHE skills:

  • Personal Development – Building confidence, resilience, and independence.
  • Relationships – Learning respect, empathy, and teamwork.
  • Living in the Wider World – Understanding democracy, responsibility, and community engagement.

These experiences prepare pupils for life beyond primary school, fostering well-being and positive citizenship.

  • Disability – Roles are accessible and inclusive for pupils with additional needs.
  • Race, Religion, and Belief – We celebrate diversity and encourage interfaith understanding.
  • Sex and Gender – Leadership roles are equally available to boys and girls.
  • Other Characteristics – We challenge stereotypes and promote fairness in every aspect of school life.

Why It Matters

Our pupil leadership programme ensures children are active participants in school life, fostering independence, respect, and responsibility. These opportunities prepare pupils for life beyond primary school and help them grow into well-rounded individuals who make a positive impact in their community.

“We are proud to nurture future leaders who live out our values and help make St. Michael a place where every voice matters.”
