Times Tables Rockstars

At St Michael’s Catholic Primary and Nursery School, we use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to help children develop quick and accurate recall of multiplication and division facts. Strong times tables knowledge supports progress in all areas of maths and helps children climb our Table Mountain reward scheme with confidence.
Why Times Tables Rock Stars?
Instant recall of times tables is essential for tackling more challenging mathematical concepts.
TTRS is a fun, motivating programme that helps children master their multiplication facts through regular practice.
To become a true Times Tables Rock Star, pupils aim to answer any multiplication fact up to 12 × 12 in under 3 seconds!
Just like professional musicians who practise chords and rhythms for hours, mastering times tables requires frequent, focused practice. Short, daily bursts of learning have been shown to be far more effective than one long session each week.
The Importance of Parental Support
Parent and carer encouragement makes a significant difference.
Children learn best when adults:
- Give praise
- Offer reminders
- Sit with them during practice
- Check their work
Your involvement helps children understand the importance of practising their times tables and keeps them motivated.
How It Works in School
Each class or group is given a set of times tables to focus on, chosen by the teacher based on the children’s needs.
As speed and accuracy improve, children move up through the Rock Status levels, celebrating their progress along the way.

Ideas to Support Your Child at Home
Here are some simple and effective ways to help your child boost their times tables knowledge:
1. Read Through the Times Tables
Read the focus times tables aloud together. Afterwards, encourage your child to say them without looking.
Accuracy comes first—speed will follow!
2. Use Scatter Tables
Download a Scatter Table for the times table you’re practising.
Call out questions (e.g. “9 × 5”) and ask your child to point to the answer.
Focus on building confidence and correctness.
3. Write Them Out
Ask your child to write the times tables:
- In order
- Out of order
Both methods strengthen recall.
4. Use Songs, Chants or Raps
Times table songs (such as Percy Parker or MathsRockx) make learning fun and memorable.
5. Complete TTRS Practice Sheets
Download and use the times-table‑specific practice sheets to support learning.
6. Play TTRS Online or on the App
Use your child’s login card (in their home–school book) to access the website or app.
Daily short practice sessions help build instant recall.
